AICE published the article written by AICE Board member Giampiero Brioni entitled “Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment In The Construction Sector.”

The month of February in the year 2015 saw the average atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide touch 400 parts per million, a level never reached in the last 23 million years. Today we breathe air that none of our ancestors have ever breathed. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are increasing by more than two p.p.m. per year, an increase that has been enough to raise the global annual average temperature by 0.8 °C over the past three decades.

Many observations and important reports have shown conclusively that the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is due almost entirely to human activities. But what are the major sources of CO2 production and, for what is intended to be the subject of this paper, what share of greenhouse gas emissions is the construction sector responsible for?
